Academy Award

|
|||
Congratulations on your starring role in this lifetime’s melodrama. You win the academy award for your performance. A trophy earned by walking on heads and motivated by your need for attention. The only time of day that I’d give you is the time it’d take to tell you to make like a tree and get the fuck outta here.

In this place, everything’s based on race and people are no longer people but shades of brown. He’s not “that guy,” he’s “that black guy.” Over and over you try to make me choose “you’re one of us” or “are you blacker or whiter.” I can’t be either, so I check the box labelled “other” and leave the blank line alone. I walk with my head hung low because the southern ghost haunts every face and hardens the mortar between every brick of every wall that makes people identify with a color.

I play my guitar ’til I break the strings. Every treadmill step I’ve taken has come back and I’m walking all over myself. I don’t grin and bear it ‘cos I’m full of shit. There’s nothing you can do to please me. Nothing to make this piece of shit satisfied.

Run
01:25
|
|||
I call this song ”run” ‘cos that’s all we ever do. I’d say this song’s sad ‘cos we don’t even care. Run from our minds. Run from ourselves. Get in a car and go 60 mph, running from one place to another. In search of elusive joy, we run from the truth, drink ourselves stupid and put it all on hold. I’ve come to the optical conclusion that we couldn’t stand life if we slowed down to see it and everything unblurred.

All of my friends are dropping like flies, falling into the web of career choices. They’ve settled down before they could stand up. They go to bed at 10pm and compromise their free time for decent pay and a neon light environment. They make enough money to finance the beginning of the American dream. Just threw flexibility into the down-payment pit. I miss my friends who have done it all by passing a drug test and having a clean shirt and a high school diploma.

The Gods Must Be Crazy
00:46
|
|||
The gods must be crazy, they want 10% of our income. The gods must be crazy, they want us to stand in front of abortion clinics, raising hell. I can’t talk and not hear back. They’ve sucked the fun out of love and turned spirituality into a burden.

I don’t care how hard you work. Being exploited is nothing to be proud of. You’re sheep in sheep’s clothing. Being exploited is nothing to be proud of! The Charlie Daniels Band sings about America. They run right-wing mouths about the working man. Do you want to be like the Charlie Daniels Band? If something’s gonna die tonight, I hope it’s your macho attitude.

My friend blah blah blah who’s in this cool band, they’re on na na na records. I met them at this fest and we’re all such great friends, we send each other X-mas cards and internet rumors about where to get all the right records on a spectrum of colors of vinyl. I think they made eye contact with Ian MacKaye. They get into all the shows for free ‘cos they do this inspiring zine. They sound like some obscure indie rock band that you don’t give a shit about. But just ask me, I’ve got all their records, even the ones from after they sucked. Goddamn we’re a tight knit community, we were the first kids on the block to hear Iron Maiden!

Money’s the highest branch on the prioritree. Personal gain’s the crackling, falling leaves. Unwitting impulse, you’re a victim of the capitalist crash. A lingering fear of anything outside of your seven-eleven world keeps you plastered in front of the TV, beer in hand. Everytime I need inspiration, I look at you. You’re everything that sucks about America.

It’s not for convenience or just by chance. I could say I hate you, but it wouldn’t be fair. It could be reasonable. You’ll wash off like lakewater, leaving a film. You’re not pretty and deep, I guess you’re full of shit, and if it’s one-sided, I’m wasting my time. I find it hard to believe that the same full moon that shines down on you could shine down on me.

That’s it. No more feet in my face, sweaty backs on my arm, football jocks undercover as music aficionados. I won’t take it. I’m tempted to stoop to their level, but violence should be a last resort. I’ve fallen off the end of my rope and I think I’m gonna take the next kickboxer and throw them down. Twenty on one is not a fair fight. Go home and play football until Lollapalooza rolls around.

Feeding lines to minds that couldn’t care less. You’re so good at telling us what we want to hear. I wish I could just leave you alone, you’re an expert at telling me what I want to hear. If you can’t make it clear, don’t bother. I’m tired of taking hints. Where do you go when all trust is lost? Is this your gift of gab? Is it pumped from your heart? How close is too close not to be affected?

Skin cancer might disappear because we never leave our houses, the shade of our rooms, our computer’s cold stare. In a world crowded with cloned sheep, what will we do, hide in the living rooms of our suburban websites? Will the poor’s housing projects be filthy blue mailboxes? Will it take more time and imagination than TV?

Day one, I thought you were alright. Day two, I called your bluff, and I’m waiting for you to piss everyone off, so you’ll move back to your parents house, where you should have stayed in the first place. What can someone with no creativity do to make their mark on the scene? They’re not gonna do a band or a zine, they’re gonna shoot for scene points. I hope that everyone you ever talked shit about becomes cool, so you have to kiss their asses too!

Take this one to heart. When open arms are closed by cold shoulders, and days devoid of communication. No one reaches out and you begin to wonder, were you a partner or a step? You’re not tight anymore and you know it, but how loose can it get before it doesn’t count at all?

Wake up each day with a new way, a new idea. Something else to do to keep my mind off of everything from the last few months. It’s hard to make a 90 degree or 180 degree turn when I wanna be in the same place, even though that place just about killed me. Boo hoo. Of course I only remember the good stuff, but I wish I could say I don’t give a shit about you.

If you thought I was unlucky, you’re so incredibly wrong. Just because it shines doesn’t mean it’s not bullshit. I’m sure I’m fine even if I don’t get a different one drunk and fuck it each weekend. I think I’ve learned a lot about myself instead of what I can take advantage of. I think I’m pretty sure I’m glad I had to deal with people like you so maybe now I can feel... lucky?

You’re a fucking liar. I trusted everything you said. You made me wanna impress you. I tried everything I could. They say what goes around comes around and I just think it might. Maybe then you’ll learn the difference between what’s wrong and what’s right. At first I tried to be your friend but you ran me dry. How come I was the ass of all your jokes? I never know why. When I pulled away from your crowd... oh! You’ve done nothing wrong. You act like I was at fault but it was you all along. All those days by myself, they taught me well. I don’t need you anymore. Turned over new leaves until the tree was bare. Sucked the sap at the shallowest levels, until the bark ran dry. You know what happens then? Fall’s on the way so plant a seed. All you say just tightens the noose for future years when each shout you had is just another nail in the coffin. Spend later times trying to bury old skulls and lock them in the closet along with your old ideals. Fall’s on the way so plant a seed. Believed your mind to be stagnant, once choice to be for good. Don’t deny yourself the options, don’t be tracked in any way. A life with one belief is a life with no progress, gonna be ridiculed if you’re “true ‘til death.” Dove in head first with your life in one direction. In your whole life, it’s just a small cross section.
